Re: London Caddy Spoon - Pewter or Silver ?

Hi,
X was a quality mark on British pewter. It was crowned until 18th century.
Usually one can easily tell the difference between two metals, pewter being very soft.

Re: Vesta case

Hi,
This is not French maker`s mark.Besides,if that is the only mark, cannot be French vesta case.
Generally, if there is only maker`s mark, it is almost impossible to identify the country, and let alone the silversmith.

Hi,
Unusual to have Roman fasces on German cigarette case (it is a cigarette case, right ?).
On the other hand, very appropriate gift by a German to his Italian friend in the thirties.

Re: Silversmith ID

There are not many silversmiths starting with M dot in PL working in St Petersburg at the time.
Try to eliminate one by one.

Re: Silversmith ID

Hi,
The mark is not well struck (applied) so, there is double struck one letter of the initials (M).
Egg coin purse has two halves, therefore both halves should bear the same marks.
Another mark should be better, because striking both marks wrongly the same way is hardly possible.

Hi, Magnetic test is done to exclude, not to prove. If positive it excludes silver. If negative.it does not prove it IS silver. In short, magnetic test is done to EXCLUDE precious metals (if positive). Although platinum is very weakly magnetic. Never heard of non magnetic ferro alloys and steel. Reg...

Hi, There are exactly the same items made of silver (prata) and stainless steel. The link to their catalogue: https://www.wolffbrasil.com.br/catalogo Marks are not shown, though. It goes without saying that stainless steel is magnetic, silver is not. So, test it with magnet then electronically for th...

Re: Plz help identify this mark on a Jewish? Goblet. Russian? Israel?

Hi,
It is Moscow 1896.
Maker^s mark is on the left, but not clean and too dark to decipher, particularly the first letter is important. The second looks like Ч (Cyrillic).

Re: Do You Know this Maker?

Hi, This is very nice sweetheart brooch and fully marked, too, which is rather uncommon compared with many examples simply marked sterling during the Great War.It is still a mystery to me that so many sweetheart brooches are without British hallmarks.Possibly made elsewhere inthe Commonwealth. There is no controversy here: 1. Again, Kolotoschin Aleksej worked in Yaroslavl, not Moscow. PL 3816 and 3817
But there is no НД assayer in Yaroslavl.
Besides, is there town mark in champagne flutes posted here (it is plural, i.e. flutes, must be town mark in at least one).
