The 18g mark denotes the actual amount of silver deposited onto a set of 12 spoons and 12 forks. This style of marking is usually associated with the French silverware industry.

Yes indeed, it would be good to see an enhanced photo of these marks. Barnard's plating works were, I believe, short lived, having been set up under the supervision of the great Michael Farraday who was related to Barnard family by marriage.

The mark to the right of the convention mark appears to be the mark of the Sheffield assay office.

Without any maker's mark there is really no clue at all to the origin of this ashtray. The arms shown, as I'm sure you know, are those of the French city of Orléans and this piece would have probably been made for the tourist trade.

Unless the business end of the fork is hallmarked, then only the ferule will be silver. This combination of a plated piece with a silver ferule is quite normal.

Suspect the dating of of this piece will be somewhat later.

These spoons will be silver plated. It was the popular choice as from the later part of the 19th century of English silver platers to name their products with colourful titles such as Bengal Silver, Potsoi Silver, Brazilian Silver, Sydney Silver, etc., etc. as a marketing technique.
