Re: Florentine cutlery set
Hello Amena Thanks for the follow-up. I guess nobody likes to be contradicted, therefore you might not hear from the seller. As for “experts,” does their responsibility vary by their location? In France they are government licensed, and must stand by their description of the object. Therefore the ri...

Re: Florentine cutlery set
Hello Amena All I can say is that someone with the credentials of this expert should have seen in seconds that a boxed set of flatware was not Italian silver from the 17th C. Furthermore the estimate given is delusional. In France, the owner would be lucky to get even 25% of the stated high estimate...

Re: Florentine cutlery set
Hello Amena Thank you for the warning, and for analyzing this listing. Of course, as you say, anyone with even basic knowledge can see that this is a standard boxed set of flatware, usually given as a wedding gift, dating to mid-nineteenth C or later. How does anyone who pretends to call themselves ...

Re: Is this box from 1595?
Hello Guido
Yes, I see the repair on the frame, now that you point it out.
The boxes I’ve seen in museum collections from the 16th C are casket form.
However, my experience with boxes is very limited, so I bow to your knowledge of this subject.
Regards.

Re: Is this box from 1595?
Hello Guido Based on the photos alone, I don’t see any Renaissance design elements on this box. The 2 appliqués on either side of the intaglio have curves and counter-curves that look more rococo in style, and this design is echoed in the frieze around the circumference. The box is giving 18th C rat...

P.S. The Tétard symbol of a kettle (une huguenotte) is also very distinctive and specific to this maker.

Hello
Agree with Trev that this is just a worn mark. I have little doubt that your items are by Tétard.

Re: French maker's mark 1809-1819
Thank you for this additional info.from your research. Yes, it would appear that they were partners, as they both marked. But it isn’t clear the role of each. Baudin was a plater, according to the entry in Arminjon, so I assume he did the gold plating over the silver boxes manufactured by Lecoufle. ...

Re: French maker's mark 1809-1819
Hello Your box was made by Nicolas Lecoufle, maker of boxes and small objects in gold and silverplate, working in Paris at 242 rue St-Denis. He registered marks in 1809, 1811-1812, and 12 December 1823, erased 1 September 1831. He died 31 July 1830. Lecoufle’s widow, Catherine-Marie-Flor Torlet carr...

Re: Chocolate pot, Paris, 1798-1809
Hello Both chocolate pots and coffee pots can have side handles. However, if there is no opening in the lid for a muddler then it is a coffee pot. Opening the lid to insert a muddler before serving the beverage would be impractical and messy. The chocolate needs stirring before serving to suspend ch...

Re: Chocolate pot, Paris, 1798-1809
Hello The maker of your pot was Louis-Joseph Bouty (called Milleraud-Bouty, senior), initials LJMB, symbol a lily-of-the valley flower (une fleur de muguet). He made hollowware in Paris at 47, quai de l’Horloge. Bouty started his career in pre-Revolutionary times, registering his first mark on 23 Ja...

In France this would be a cream ladle, used during the dessert course to serve crème anglaise or other light custard creams.
Enjoy your ladle!

Re: French maker?
Hello Yes indeed French marks can be tricky, made even trickier by your out-of-focus images. The top mark, CB under a Croix de Lorraine with a crescent underneath is from the Nancy jurisdiction, specifically Mirecourt, dating to the late 18th C. See Tardy, p. 164, second row. As for the maker’s mark...

@bijoux expert I’m puzzled by several of your statements: -French 950 standard silver is “flimsy” by comparison with French silver plate. In decades of handling French silver, I’ve never noticed this. Do you have a published source to back up your statement? -suggestion that the object shown is not ...
