Thank you Miss Ray for your comment. I posted my query on the forum because I wasn't sure. The engraving is neat and quite symmetrical and does not seem to bring the piece out of balance. I also think that 'old fashioned ' rococo ornament can sometimes be found on late 18th century pieces and that B...

No luck Tom, but thanks anyway. I will soon be in London:I might check on the books mentioned at some of the larger (second hand) book shops. Dear Silsella, Looking up on Google :Jes Barkentin is a Danish Arts and Crafts silversmith ,who is very unlikely to have something to do with this patch box. ...

Thank you very much for this suggestion,Silsella.
I was almost sure this stamp could not be a makers mark. I will try and look this up.
It is a shame that I seem not to be able to open the reference e- books on the forum. Do you know of other ways to access these books online?
Thank you,
Robbert

This light gauge small patch box (2.5 cm in diameter x 1.3 cm in height) probably dates from around 1680 (see Eric Delieb's 'Silver Boxes'). There is an undecipherable maker's mark on the inside of both box and lid. The amorous message seems to reflect the condition of the box: it is more fine than ...

Early Patch box - Strange mark

This end of the 17th century patch box has a pleasant tactile quality. It measures 3.5 cm across and 1 cm in height. The back is shown with worn laurel-wreath decoration and amorous message. See Eric Delieb's 'Silver Boxes' for more information on similar items. The front carries a more common motiv...

engraving contemporary?

This salt cellar (London,1792) with (overstruck) mark of Thomas Ollivant was probably made by Peter and Anne Bateman. Overstriking has been discussed before on this forum, see : http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3549 However, the engraved decoration is not at all typical for P and A Bate...
