Re: ID Springbok Deer Makers Mark African? South Africa

Hi Not a springbok - the sterling guarantee for South Africa - but a Sable antelope (all be it in the style of San cave paintings). The sable antelope was used as the sterling guarantee for Rhodesia, but I have never seen a mark like this one. It was a more stylized version of the sable in a triangu...

Re: Help with marks on a large try

Hi Peter - many thanks. I will research Portugal.
I am fairly sure the letters are DEN but thanks for the insight on Mr Diemont.
I had thought the crowned B might be a dutch date letter - but probably a city mark

Help with marks on a large try

Hi All - I think this may be Dutch, but it could be continental - it's a large and rather heavy tea tray measuring about 40cm by 30 weighing about 1.2kg. It has a a simple gadrooned border and to me looks late C18 or turn of C19. There are only two marks on the front of the tray right near the galle...

Possible London duty dodge?

Hi All Thought these marks were interesting. I have a set of three bead pattern tablespoons from George Smith, two assayed in London in 1784 (no duty marks) with a small George Smith maker's mark, and one simply stamped three times with a large George Smith maker's mark and a small one. I do apologi...

Unusual Lawrence Twentyman mark

Hi All - a table spoon from Lawrence Twentyman - Cape Town C1830 - with an unusual lyre hallmark. York teaspoon

Hi All - another example of York silver - an old English teaspoon for 1821 for James Barber and William Whitewell, Sadly a somewhat unfortunate engraving. Many thanks Frank http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll197/frankchemaly/york%20teaspoon1_zpszzhsexft.jpg http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll197...

Dating South African silver

Hi All - I found a collection of eight South African silver napkins rings of standard form and of themselves not very exciting, but these were obviously given as prizes by the NCAU (untraced) and each has a different date engraved on it and different hallmarks. Now while there is no guarantee that t...

Could these picture backs be Newcastle

Hi All a set of four picture back teaspoons stamped only with HB and a lion passant. I started with London and found only Henry Bates 1738 and Henry Brind 1743 - none of which had a pellet, and both perhaps a shade early. Henry Bayley 1750 has a crown above. I even wondered if it was not an early ma...

Aberdeen ladles

Hi All I would appreciate any help on this set of four toddy ladles, stamped G.B and A B D N. My copy of Jacksons shows the marks, but maker unknown. Maybe some one has some insight. I presume C1800. - many thanks Frank http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll197/frankchemaly/aberdeen%20toddies1_zpsv7h...

could these be Joseph Hicks

Hi All Have this set of bright cut teaspoons with shell bowls. The lion passant looks like it could be Exeter and hoping JH is for Joseph Hicks. Presume late C18, but wondering if anyone could tell anything from the duty mark. Also unusually, these have "fiddle" shoulders. Many thanks Fran...

Would these be the marks of Richard Ferris?

Hi Think these are Exeter and presume they're the marks for Richard Ferris. Date letter is unreadable unfortunately - could be the f of 1791. Why the letter series went r f t I am not sure. The rather naive bright cut is remarkably similar to that on a pair of tongs I have, possibly the same engrave...

Rhodesian silver date letters

Hi All I stumbled across this spoon and thought it might be interesting simply to show Rhodesian silver hallmarking conventions. Which I did not know existed. including a date letter <Q> for 1978. Now I am not sure whether they had a 20 or 25 letter cycle and included I and J but it may be of intere...

Re: 18th century salver - probably Irish

Hi Warren and Trev Many thanks for taking some time on this. Warren, I've had another look at the mystery mark 7. I am fairly sure it extends beyond the "capital D" section. If it is a letter, I would have to guess a small g. If anything it looks like the top right portion of a second crow...

Not Cape - possibly Indian colonial?

Hi All - any help with the marks on this rather well used fiddle pattern table fork would be appreciated. Have seen pseudo marks like these before but can't quite place them. It looks like C.Z. the a capital typewriter B, then a crowned leopards head that looks more like a pineapple, a lion passant ...

18th century salver - probably Irish

Hi All - I have this 22cm salver which looks 18th century and probably Irish. The marks are very rubbed and partially lost in the reverse of the engraving which is struck very deeply. but think i can make out the crowned harp and possibly a gothic capital T for 1739. The third mark is rubbed into ob...
