Re: Please help identifying the maker of this frame

Sorry Admin, I did preview, I knew the pictures didn't show but after reading the instructions repeatedly I could not figure out what to do and although I had done it correctly in the past I couldn't remember. Could you add an example to the the instructions?

Please help identifying the maker of this frame

I was given this frame by my grandmother with family photo. I believe she acquired it in Barbados but I don't know that for sure. The marks are hard to read (and photograph) having a very hard time with the maker's marks, then there is the lion and what looks to me like Chester, as for the script R ...

Re: Tortoiseshell Box

It has been a long time but I have found out a little more about my box -- the maker was Claude-Nicolas Grébeude, who worked in Paris from 1723-1751 and the disc on top appears to be the Order of Calatrava (the first military order founded in Castile, but the second to receive papal approval, the p...

Sheffield Bowl

Thank you very much. I am sure you are correct that the bowl is plated. The truly impossible to read marks are fitting a pattern as this is the second item I tried to learn more about this week only to find that when the marks are thick and unreadable like this the item is plate! Best, D.

XXXX Spoon

Good Morning --

I wondered what was this spoon designed to do with its unique shape. I am also baffled by the mark: LTENHAM-XXXX SHEFFIELD ENGLAND. Appreciate your help very much. Best, Diane

Tiny Pair of Spoons

Good Morning -- These tiny spoons, 3.75 inches long, have gilded bowls (I think, sorry they are tarnished, I also need to know how to clean they correctly), a lion on the handle, and a string of marks. Maybe Charles Shipway? Maybe not! Could not apply all the marks anywhere. Help is greatly apprecia...

Berry Spoons Cont.

Please look at my pictures at your convenience, I've put in two new views. I apologize in advance, I find the mark so hard to read I can't be sure if I even have it right way up. Thanks again, Diane

Silver Sheffield Bowl

Good Morning -- I hope that someone will recognize this scallop shaped bowl and be able to discern what the marks are saying -- I'm sorry but I just cannot make them out -- other than the "Made in Sheffield England" of course. It measures 10 inches by 9 inches and has four fish feet. I do ...

Another Pair of Berry Spoons

Good Morning -- I just read a truly impressive reply to a question asked by jbaaep on 6/27/08 from dognose and I hope that someone will have a similar wealth of information about my berry spoons too. The note that came with them said Sheffield circa 1880. The makers mark is absolutely unreadable. Th...

Christofle Knives

Patrick -- That is such an interesting question -- as I mentioned in my reply to Dragonfly the mark is shown on the "less-is-known" section of the Christofle page -- but also the mark itself on almost all the knives is very golden and the close-up pictures I took all came up with gold tone...

Christofle Knives

The knives are 7.5 inches long and at that short length I thought perhaps they were fruit knives or similar although their rounded ends would not be good for fruit. Also two of the handles are much smaller in girth than the other four. They also have the scales & bee mark that is in the "we...

Christofle Knives

Thank you. I am aware of the excellent page on Christofle on this site but I am curious about any specific information that might explain the irregular appearance of these knives i.e. age, purpose, etc.

Christofle Knives

Very curious about these six knives especially because while they match they are very different -- why? The stamp is so tiny and so faint I apologize for the pictures but after trying for hours these are the best shots. Do believe the stamp says Christofle. Do others agree? Any ideas how old? Any ot...

Tastevin Reply

Thank you very much. What you have written makes sense and helps to explain the old age of the coin not matching the fairly new look of the piece. Perhaps your comments will spark someones memory as to an "Exeter" company. Again, thanks for your interest and information. Best, D.

Tortoiseshell Box

Love this box with tortoiseshell top with (mother-of-pearl?) and silver insets. Box measures 3 inches x 2 1/8 inches x 7/8 inch. Scene of (pointed) houses encircles the box. Marks are from inside and almost impossible to photograph. Any thoughts on this very mysterious box would be greatly appreciat...

Cocktail reply

Thank you Patrick! The first reply on the link you gave me had information about the torch too -- as well as the full information on the fourth. This is all so interesting -- ever since I started going through this old silver I've inherited I have been fascinated at how much I've been able to learn ...
