An American born cultural anthropologist and student of pre-Columbian archeology, Bernice Goodspeed settled in Mexico City in 1930 to complete her studies. While working as a guide to sites of antiquity, she met the Hungarian/American artist Carl Pappe and they were married in 1935. The couple settled in Taxco in 1938 where they opened a studio and gallery that sold pre-Columbian artifacts, as well as Carl's paintings & prints. Shortly after, the gallery began to offer silver jewelry and table ornaments designed and created by Bernice. Much of her work featured pre-Columbian motifs and some of the jewelry was set with Aztec and Mayan stonework. She was active as a jeweler and silversmith until her death in 1971. Bernice Goodspeed also authored a number of books on Mexico and its native crafts, many illustrated with the artwork of Carl Pappe.
