He may have been James Berkenhead who was assessed to Land Tax on property in Deans Court, St Martin Le Grand parish from 1755-1771 and who, as a bachelor from St Luke’s parish Old Street, had married Elizabeth Millington at St Andrew by the Wardrobe in 1752.
He was made free by redemption in the Weavers Company in 1772. The document is endorsed “jeweller”.
He entered marks at Goldsmiths’ Hall in 1772 and 1777 as a small worker and gold worker from 31 Gutter Lane. His predecessor at the address had been Thomas Millington (Grimwade p.285). Presumably Millington was a relation of his wife Elizabeth.
As James Berkenhead & Co he was assessed to Land Tax there from 1772-86. John Berkenhead & Co was assessed on the property from 1787. John Berkenhead (Grimwade p.363-4) entered marks as a gold worker from this address in 1789 and 1800.
The burial of a James Berkenhead aged 66 years registered in 1787 at St Mary, Islington may be relevant.
