HAMMON, William (Grimwade p.327)

Post by MCB »

There are christening records at St James, Clerkenwell from 1790-1810 for eight children of William and Ann Hammon including William John (Grimwade p.328, 352-3) born 1793 and John William (Grimwade 303, 341) born 1798. These records do not show detail of addresses or their father’s occupation.
Land Tax records show him at St James Buildings, Clerkenwell from 1799-1819. He entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall from this address in 1800 as a case maker.
His son William John gave this address at the christening of his two children in 1815 and 1817.
Grimwade records a second William Hammon entering a maker’s mark from 28 Galway Street in 1819 and changes of address by the same person to 14 Peartree Street in 1821 and to 39 Monyers Street, Hoxton in 1822. In 1819 William John Hammon advised Goldsmiths Hall he was also at 28 Galway Street. There is a possibility that both marks are those of William John but it may also be that this mark and the changes of address notified in 1821 and 1822 relate to his father William especially as the later marks are from addresses where William John is recorded elsewhere at the same time.
The burial recorded at St James, St Pancras in 1836 of a William James Hammon aged 78 years, late of Whiskin Street, may be relevant.
