GAUNT, Thomas (Grimwade p.349)

Post by MCB »

He was christened the son of Joseph and Ann Gaunt at St Botolph, Aldersgate in 1773.
He entered a mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1799 in partnership with Alexander Barker as watch case makers from 5 Bridgwater Gardens and another alone in the same trade and from the same address in 1800.
He married Elizabeth Hewitt at St John, Clerkenwell in 1803; both were from that parish.
Christening records at St Giles, Cripplegate from 1804-9 for three sons show their father as a watch case maker.
In 1815 he made an application from Charles Street, Bridgwater Gardens for freedom by patrimony in the Clockmakers Company. His brother John, who was born in 1778, applied for the same freedom from the same address in 1816. The applications were probably occasioned by the death of their father which is shown on page 120 of the book Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as occurring in 1815.
His father Joseph had been assessed to Land Tax on property in Bridgwater Gardens from 1797 and Thomas was assessed on property in Charles Street, Bridgwater Gardens from 1815-16 but no later detail has been found for him.
