He was christened the son of Joseph and Jane Wickes at St Luke, Finsbury in 1771. His father was recorded as a watch case maker.
Indentures were signed in 1786 for him to be the apprentice of William West (Grimwade p.331) Citizen, Clockmaker and watch case maker.
He married Grace Hancock at St James, Clerkenwell in 1791; both were from that parish.
The christening record of a daughter at St Luke, Finsbury in 1792 shows Joseph as a watch case maker.
Christening records of five more of their children in churches in the Clerkenwell and Islington area 1796-1803 contain no further information regarding addresses or father’s occupation.
He entered a maker's mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1794 as a case maker from 18 Islington Road, notified changes of address to Aylesbury Street, 29 Great Sutton Street and 114 Goswell Street between 1794 and 1797 and entered other maker's marks from 7 Hooper Street in 1797 and 5 St James' Walk in 1799

He entered a maker’s mark at in 1821 as a watch case maker from Wenlock Street, St Luke’s parish and another as a case maker from the same address in 1831. In the same year he notified a change of address to 13 St John’s Lane and in 1832 to 52 Sutton Street.
The 1841 UK Census recorded him at Francis Court and the 1851 UK Census at 5 Albermarle Street both in Clerkenwell and both showing he was still making watch cases.
His death in 1856 was recorded in the Clerkenwell register.
