He was christened in 1800 at Miles Walk Presbyterian Chapel, Cannon Street, the son of Richard and Sarah. The 1841 UK Census records him living with his mother Sarah, a widow and optician aged 80 years, and his elder sister Mary at 109 Bishopsgate Street where he was a silversmith.
The 1851 UK Census record for him has not been found.
In 1861 he was living with elder sister Mary and his aunt Mary, a grocer aged 95 years, at 5 Church Street, Stoke Newington where he was a jeweller.
His aunt Mary died in September 1864 leaving an estate of under £450. In his declaration to obtain Probate of her Will he had said he was a Gentleman.
On 26th November 1864 as a bachelor he married Selena Brown, a spinster from West Hackney, at West Hackney parish church. His occupation on the marriage record is shown as a jeweller and also shows shows his father had been a teller at the Royal Mint.
His sister Mary died in 1870. In his declaration to obtain Probate of her Will he said he was a general shopkeeper at Church Street, Stoke Newington. Her estate was valued at under £50.
The detail on the 1871 UK Census is the same as in the previously noted declaration.
His death in 1880 aged 79 years was recorded in the Hackney register. His widow was granted Probate of his Will. His last address was as previously noted. The value of his estate was under £100

Richard Hillum is listed in the 1851 census apparently as a boarder at 3 Cavendish St, Shoreditch with the occupation optician.

Although I've never got to the bottom of it, Richard Hillum was an important name in the production of flatware in the 1830's. His business, perhaps in name only, was the wholesale arm of the firm of Thomas Cox Savory, who sold flatware the length and breadth of the country.

Richard Hillum's manufactory was located at White Lion Court, Cornhill.

Prior to becoming a Teller at the Royal Mint which is shown on the marriage record in 1864 (see above) Grimade's biography for Richard Hillum notes his father, also Richard, as a jeweller. His last address as shown on his burial record at St Mary, Stoke Newington aged 72 years in 1840 had been Great St Helen's Street, Bishopsgate. Although close by The Royal Mint the address was also near to Cornhill raising the speculation that the original business name of Richard Hillum used in Savory's wholesale activities may have related to senior rather than junior.

It's junior, I found a reference to him at the Old Bailey trials of TCS, ref: t18331017-125, his name was transcribed wrongly as 'Hillham'

Somewhere I have a trade card of Hillum's, I'll dig it out.

It looks like I should have mentioned that the 1851 census also shows sister Sarah in the family household and as an optician.

In 1841 this sister applied for letters of administration concerning the wills of both her father and her brother Joseph an optician. The father as already mentioned died in 1840 as did the brother Joseph.

A very minor detail concerning the Richard Hillum Jr trade card. Richard Hillum is listed in the 1829 London post office directory at the address on the card with the occupation spoon and fork-maker.
