I have a mid late 19C pocket watch with a nice early swiss generic vacheron type movement. It is covered in a tiny horses head punched marks. It has french makers type stamp with the letters A and C on either side of a shape in a lozenge.
Is the horses head a recognised French assay mark?

PS Sorry aabout the lack of pics but the punch marks are only about 1.5mm across.

Hi,
Well, the horse's head could be a French mark. They used a small horses head as a gold garantie mark after 1838. The right hand side of the head will be shown, looking to the horses left.
The two letters in a lozenge are French so far. There will be one or two symbols along with the letters in the lozenge. This was done as there were more than one goldsmith with the initals A.C. If you can do better than describing it as a "shape", I'll be happy to look it up for you.

Photos of this stuff is hard, you could post a sketch of the marks. And I sure won't laught, I can't draw a straight line without a ruler ;).
