I was doing some genealogy research when I found this post. Thomas Nicklin Stead was my 3X great grandfather on my father's side. I would like to find out more about him, and wondered where to find the information posted here. I would also like to find out if he had a registered mark. Any help is truly appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.
Please see Grimwade Biographies Overview posts at the top of this Section as to why and how the information was obtained.
Your ancestor's maker's mark registration is mentioned in my original post.

Thank you for the reply. I really should have been more specific in my original post, and for that I apologize. I am not familiar with Grimwade Biographies, so wasn's sure how to actually get to read the text from which you got the information about my 3X great grandfather Thomas. I also would not know where to search to actually find his makers mark and thought you might lead me in the right direction.

I do know that his father was William Henry Stead, but did not know he was an engraver as well. However, you have his mother listed as Mary, which is not correct....his mother's name was Ann, and from marriage records I have found, I believe her maiden name was Blifs or Bliss. Thomas did have a son, also named William Henry (my 2X great grandfather), and he was married to a woman named Mary (her maiden name was Mary Ellen Morris). I can tell you that Thomas' mother was widowed rather early, and apparently remarried a goldsmith named Charles King. An 1851 census record shows Charles and Ann (Thomas's mother) living in a household at 4 Owen Row with William Fryer, another goldsmith, who was married to Thomas' sister Harriett. Thomas and his family lived at 5 Owen Row.

All that being said....I have not been able to go any further back in my family research other than knowing that William Henry and Ann were Thomas' parents. So if William was an engraver on Brewer St., that would be new information which may help to provide me with another direction for my research.

Again, I thank you for any more information you can provide, and I hope the added info I provided on other Goldsmiths of that time is somehow helpful to you.

Thank you for the further information.
As you say Thomas Nicklin Stead's mother was Ann nee Bliss who married William Henry at St Anne, Soho in 1808.
There is actually not much more to say of the biography for Thomas Nicklin in Grimwade's book; simply the note that he entered the maker's mark as mentioned above. It comprised the initials TS in Roman letters within an oval shape.
The Directory of Gold & Silversmiths Jewellers & Allied Traders Volume 1 page 274 by John Culme mentions in the biography for Charles King that a partnership between Thomas Stead and William James Fryer trading as Stead & Fryer goldsmiths or manufacturing goldsmiths was listed at Owen's Row from 1856-79.
