This information probably needs to be verified, but apparently, George Beckwith was listed in the Edinburgh Directory of 1842 at a shop at 2 Earl Grey St, Edinburgh, and he died and was buried in Edinburgh in 1844.

Hello
Thanks for the information on George Beckwith in Scotland.
In searches for additional biographic detail for the Beckwiths the name has been transcribed from the original Census records onto the website in strange ways from Beekuill to Brocksmith. With due respect to those who did the transcriptions the original writing is often obscure. There could be others not yet traced who have had similarly odd surnames transcribed which might explain why nothing has been found to date positively linking to the man Grimwade identifies.
The transcription for George in Scotland was under Berkerth and not surprisingly wasn't picked up!
The Scottish Census forms aren't available in their original form on the website being used. What is shown is George with a second initial "H" and a year of birth in England of 1791 rather than the 1786 previously identified as a christening year.
George H of 1791 nor his family is coming up on the 1851 Census in any of the usual forms which rather suggests you are right in saying he died in 1844. His family seems to have scattered and unfortunately this doesn't help in the link between Scotland and the George of 1786. Do you have any detail to show the Edinburgh trade was silverware based? This might strengthen the possibility of a Scottish connection.
Regards
Mike

This piece of further information about George Beckwith may or may not have a bearing on his removal to Scotland: in 1822 a George Beckwith age thirty-five was sentenced to two years imprisonment for larceny in Middlesex, England.
