Grimwade records the mark of John Essex and James Atkins at 12, Well Street, Cripplegate on 4th April 1791. This was a very short-lived partnership as the London Gazette - issue 13400- records it as dissolved 17th March 1792.

It appears that John Essex and the Worshipfull Company of Goldsmiths continued to hold an interest , perhaps as owner and/or mortgager, both insured 12, Well Street until 1812 at least

12 January 1809 Sun Insurance MS 11936/444/825158
Insured: John Essex, 8 Pollard Row Bethnal Green, gent., and the Worshipfull Company of Goldsmiths
Other property or occupiers: 12, Well Street Jewin Street (Atkins buckle maker)

9 January 1812 Sun Insurance MS 11936/455/864854
Insured: John Essex, 4 William's Buildings, Old Street, gent and the Worshipfull Company of Goldsmiths
Other property or occupiers: 12, Wells Street, Jewin Street (Atkins, buckle maker).

James probably died in November 1815 and his will was probated at PCC on 2 December of that year
The will is dated 10 March 1814 and left everything to his daughter Theodosia Ann Atkins. She was nominated executrix together with a William Wyld as executor.
The will was not witnessed and before probate was granted Thomas Wyld and William Webb,Working Case Maker swore on 10 November 1815 to the validity of the handwriting and signature . William Webb, whose address is not decipherable ,is probably the silversmith who entered marks as a watchcase maker given in Grimwade page 354

A James Atkins (born c1750) was buried at St Giles without Cripplegate on 21st September 1815. His daughter Theodosia Ann entered her mark at Goldsmiths Hall on 27th September which ties in nicely.

Thanks to Mike we can also tell from the burial record that James Atkins was aged 65 (or thereabout ) at the time of his death .
