NORWOOD, Joseph (1545)

A newspaper report that reveals the fate of Joseph Norwood.

"On Friday Night last as Mr. Joseph Norwood, a Silver Buckle Maker who has left oft Trade, was crossing from Goswell-street to go to his House in Brick-lane, he fell into a Ditch and was suffocated. In the Morning, when he was found, he had his Money, Watch, and Rings, but his Buckles were taken out of his Shoes."

Thus, date of death: 23rd/24th April 1756

Amazing that, from just this few lines, we can gather, date of death, probable cause of death, his trade as a buckle maker, the fact that he was not working in the trade at this date, where he lived, and the fact that he certainly did not appear to be destitute.

24 April 1756 - London Evening Post reports that Joseph Norwood ,formerly a Silver Buckle Maker in Swan Alley ,Goswell Street was found suffocated in a ditch at the upper end of Brick Lane in St Lukes Parish

27th April 1756- Public Advertiser reports " On Friday night last as Mr Joseth Norwood a Silver Buckle Maker who had left off Trade was crossing from Goswell Street to go to his House in Brick Lane, he fell into a Ditch and was suffocated. In the Morning, when he was found, he had his Money, Watch and Rings, but his Buckles were taken out of his Shoes"
One imagines his legs were sticking out of the water and some passerby removed them !

27th April 1756 - Will of Joseph Norwood of the parish of Saint James Clerkenwell Middlesex, working Goldsmith and Silversmith proved at Prerogative Court of Canterbury. Made 5th June 1754 "being infirm in body "
Gives small bequests to a large number of people, none recognised as silversmiths .

4 December 1741 Joseph son of William Norwood stationer of London admitted into freedom of the city in the company of stationers by patrimony.

6 November 1744 Luke son of Joseph Lea late of Saint Luke's Parish in the County of Middlesex mealman deceased apprenticed to Joseph Norwood stationer of London.
