Silver Pocket Watch and Leather watch chain/strap

Postby SimonJersey » Mon Nov 09, 2009 5:40 pm

Hello all
I'm stumped by the maker of the following two items, please could I have some advice?
The first is a pocket watch (Made or retailed by John Gallichan, Jersey "30998") with Hallmarks for London 1867. I am not certain of the maker "RHJ"

The second is a Leather and Silver strap/chain which is with the watch, the buckle bears hallmarks for London 1868/1928 (The swivel clip merely bears the Leopards head and Lion Passant as well as the maker). I am trying to ascertain the correct date (if the strap is much later than the watch) and the maker - which looks like "P&SS" (The clip is tiny, about a cm wide, hoping the pictures are clear enough)

Many thanks
Simon

Hi Simon,

I don't have an example of his mark, but there was in this timeframe, a Clerkenwell watchcase maker Robert Henry Jones, and suspect this will be his mark.

Hopefully someone with better references will confirm.

Hello Simon,
The mark on the watch is confirmed as the one used by R H Jones active 1851-1906.
The buckle was put to London assay by E J Pearson & Sons of Manchester Square London. The mark used here was registered in 1909 so the assay date letter "n" is the one for 1928-9.
