Towle Silversmiths buys New York sterling firm

Towle Silversmiths in Newburyport, Mass., has purchased Mueck-Cary Co., Inc., large New York sterling hollowware manufacturer.

Towle President Elliott M. Gordon said Mueck-Cary’s manufacturing operations will be transferred to Towle’s Newburyport plant. “We feel that the acquisition of this business,” said Gordon, "is a most appropriate one for Towle, whose craft tradition extends back to 1690".

No production plans have yet been announced.

KINSMAN REELECTED TOWLE PRESIDENT

Newburyport, Mass.—William A. Kinsman was reelected president of Towle Mfg. Co. at a meeting of the directors after the annual meeting of the stockholders at the company’s offices here Feb. 15.

Others elected are: Harold E. Nock, Arthur L. Fuller and John S. O’Connell, vice-presidents; Jerome A. Hardy, secretary and treasurer, and, directors, Henry B. Trask, chairman; John Balch, Jr., Harry F. Cole, Ernest Foss, Arthur L. Hobson, Mr. Kinsman, George A. Learned, Mr. Nock, Henry M. Williams and Mr. Hardy.

The New York office of the Towle Mfg. Co., Inc., formerly located at 20 W. 47 St., was recently moved into new and ultra-modern quarters at 581 Fifth Ave.

During the winter months, Towle Silversmiths, Newburyport, Mass., have extended invitations to college, school, and club groups to visit their new gallery and to go on conducted tours of the factory. The tour provides opportunity to see the various operations on sterling silver, and the gallery has changing exhibitions of rare silver made in colonial days by the Moultons, Towle’s direct predecessors. The properties and characteristics of sterling silver are shown.

Gornall Named Sales Mgr. Of Towle Silversmiths

The appointment of O. Wendell Gornall as general sales manager was announced recently by Towle Silversmiths, Newburyport, Mass.

Mr. Gornall joined the Towle sales organization in 1948 as manager of the New York office. In January, 1950, he was placed in charge of the Chicago office as western regional manager. He was transferred to the home office in Newburyport as assistant general sales manager in 1952.

John S. O’Connell, vice president of sales, will continue his close association with the trade in this capacity. Mr. O’Connell is well-known among jewelers, buyers and members of the silver industry through his 40-odd years with Towle Silversmiths.

Charles A. Bartling, of the Chicago office of the Towle Mfg. Co., accompanied by his wife and daughter, left last week to motor through the East and spend some time at the Adirondack Mountains.

O. F. Samuelson, Harry Hillman, F. J. Spellman and C. M. Simpson, of the Towle Mfg. Co., left on Monday of this week for their respective territories and will be away for several weeks. This is their first fall trip for the season.

Towle Presents New Pattern


Towle - Newburyport, Mass. - 1961

Towle Silversmiths are currently introducing their latest pattern, Vespera. Descriptions from Towle say that this sterling, designed for versatility, is perfectly suitable for modern or traditional settings, and for formal or informal occasions.

Vespera lines are simple, consisting of a slight curve which ends in a small arc at the tip of the handle. Further adornment can be provided in the form of applied monograms or engraved initials, if the customer wishes.

Retail prices for a six-piece place setting are plain, $39.95; engraved, $44.25; applied monogram, $49.95.

Towle Manufacturing Company, Newburyport, Mass., has purchased control of Charles D. Briddell, Inc., Crisfield, Md., manufacturer of the Carvel Hall cutlery line. Eliott M. Gordon, Towle president, reports that his firm will continue to operate the Briddell Company with present management and employes, and that subcontract work now being done by Briddell will be continued. New products are also planned.
