Gorham Conference Opens

Members of Sales Staff of Silverware Concern Meet in Elmwood, for Three-Day Conclave

PROVIDENCE, R. I., Jan. 29.—Nearly 75 members of the sales force of the Gorham Mfg. Co., coming from all parts of the United States, began gathering yesterday in this city for the annual three-days sales conference of the district managers, salesmen, officials, and heads of departments, which opened this morning at the company’s plant at Elmwood. The conference was under the general direction of Gordon Lang, director of sales development, and a very comprehensive program had been arranged.

With sessions scheduled for each morning and afternoon, the entire group was welcomed this morning at the opening meeting by Edmund C. Mayo, president of the corporation, who outlined the scope and purposes of the conference, spoke of the achievements of the past year and the hopes for the coming year, and explained new styles and the policies that are to be followed. During the day there was a series of lectures upon various phases of merchandising, followed by general round-table discussions and an interchange of problems and solutions that have confronted the salesmen in various sections. Luncheons were provided each day at the Gorham Casino, so that no time was lost by leaving the plant.

Tomorrow and Thursday the party will be divided into small groups, and under the leadership of department heads will be shown through the plant, shown the new designs and the new season’s merchandise, with information and instructions pertaining to them calculated to assist in the making of sales. The new plans and policies of the company will also be outlined and fully set forth, so that there may be a general understanding and perfect harmony in the workings of the entire force.
