what is this and where is it from?

Post by jimara921 »

I was cleaning out a box of my old toys and found this little silver box at the bottom. The only marking I can see are AU AK 84 on the bottom part and the top lid has AU 84and some type of marking I can't seem to make out. Anyone can help identify what and where its from please thank you! Any one know how to post pictures? I'm new here

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Can you post some sharper, larger images of both sets of marks?

Use the macro feature on your camera, and use natural daylight for lighting, no flash.

It is a cigarette box and looks like Moscow, assayer AK i.e. Andrey Kovalsky ~1821-56 and the maker AC could be Aleksey Isayev Sokolov ~1830, but better pictures give better answers.

Sorry, the maker's mark is not AC but АЦ (ACh). It could be Andrey Chelibayev ~1852 or Anisim Chyplionkov ~1838 both in Moscow but ....?

At that size I would think it to be a snuff box.

Qrt.S is the expert. For him to be sure, you need to provide him with larger, shaper images of the marks.

The ...but?? means that I'm not sure of the maker, poor marks. In addition, I gave you two approximate years ~1838 and ~1852. With those measures it is a snuff box or pill box.

Probably:
1838 +/-.

Assay master - Andrey Kovalsky (AK), Moscow

Master maker - Tsyplyonkov Anisim (АЦ), mentioned in 1838, presented for hallmarking 2 pounds of silverware. Moscow. Initials on the hallmarks: АЦ (Ivanov A.N. “Gold and silversmiths in Russia (1600-1926)”. Moscow, 2002)

For example hallmarking 1838, Moscow:

Hi all -

here a little tutorial about the differences of cigarette and/or pill or snuffboxes. In Europe and more or less in the rest of the modern world are the metric measures (cm - mm)now usus!

The known main measures of Russian cigarette cases:

Image

The typical Russian cigarette (papyrossi) 8,3 mm - 5cm carton mouthpiece - 3,3 cm tobacco:

The different sizes of snuff/pill boxes:

Cigarette case and papyrossi, different measures and forms possible - see drawing above:

What you have is either a snuff or pill box - depending for what you used it.

Thanks a lot guys wow this is interesting info!
So the AU and AK are both makers marks? Does that mean 2 people worked on this piece or am I confused? Lol
