Hi,
Help needed on this large serving/table spoon.
This was part of a set with AC Dundee.
The spoons matched well and were numbered half like this and half Dundee.
I think they are probably not Scottish but as the marks are well struck
I hope someone can give a definite attribution.

C.S. Serving Spoon, Continental?
Re: C.S. Serving Spoon, Continental?
From that style it is definitely not continental. http://incorporationofgoldsmiths.org/ shows the CS mark as unidentified Edinburg. See CS-2a
They don't list the FR mark, but there are some candidates.

Re: C.S. Serving Spoon, Continental?
Hi Maurice,
I have looked at the link you gave, The CS mark looks similar but a poor match and I feel the maker (1874)
is not early enough, its strange to have 2 x CS marks, one with pellets and one without. I would place the spoon circa 1800.
I hoped maybe Scottish though as the spoon was part of a set that involved half Dundee.
Thanks for reply on this odd one.

Re: C.S. Serving Spoon, Continental?
I hope you got the right mark on that site cs-2a, because it looks like the last on the right on yours. I don't agree with your spoon being that early, I would think at least 20 years later. Also the date given on the website is, I think, just the owner's opinion.

Re: C.S. Serving Spoon, Continental?
Hi Maurice,
I did look at the mark you referred to and agree it is similar but I think the "C" is a lot narrower near the ends and the "S" looks almost
square in the top left hand side on their mark, not yet convinced, perhaps the F-R mark may help throw some light on this one.
Not sure what the little sheaf? or plumes? are meant to depict either.
Cheers Bob

Re: C.S. Serving Spoon, Continental?
I hope I don't sound argumentative, but my opinion is they are the same mark. Of course you have an advantage as you can compare you mark in hand to their mark. But theirs was obviously poorly struck, the damaged later, all the spaces are the same, and a few points like the sharp end of the C. etc. are the same. When a mark is poorly struck, I concentrate on the similarities not the differences which can be caused by the strike.
I presumed the pseudo mark was the Prince of Wales feathers, or at least their idea of them.

Hi Maurice,
I do agree the CS mark is similar but was hoping for a definite attribution,
Its frustrating that on such a well struck item no one has names to fit the marks.
Thanks for the input though, much appreciated.
