Provincial silver spoon?

Post by Granmaa »

Here is a good quality silver teaspoon; it has only one mark: G&L. I'd date it at c.1800.
Does anyone recognize this mark and where it's from? Any help will be appreciated.

I recently found out that this style of ampersand was used in Scotland, but I've still had no luck with the maker.

It was made by Gordon & Lovell of Madras between 1803 - 7.
See p76 Wynyard Wilkinson's Indian Colonial Silver.

Thankyou very much Scotprov, I would never have thought of Indian origin. Were large amounts of flatware imported back to Britain?

A fair quantity. Members of the Raj had their nice canteens of silver out there, then, when they came home, they naturally brought it with them as the Indian stuff cost a fraction of the home produced silverwares. Added satisfaction was that it made them the 'Jones's' with whom everyone else had to keep up, but at an exhorbitant price!
