ROSS, Thomas (Grimwade p.647)

Post by MCB »

No christening record has come to light for him but his apprenticeship began in 1794 and if the usual entry age of 14 years applied he would have been born around 1780 (see below age at death).
He married Elizabeth Webster in 1812 at St Martin in the Fields; both were from that parish.
Christening records for two children of Thomas, a silversmith, and Elizabeth Ross in 1814 and 1816 at St John, Clerkenwell show their address as Green Street from where Thomas entered a maker’s mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1819. The christening record of a daughter at St James, Clerkenwell in 1819 shows their address as Leicester Square but this was the location of Green Street and may not indicate a change.
The burial of a Thomas Ross aged 45 years of Green Street was recorded at St Martin in the Fields in 1825. This detail is at odds with Grimwade’s note that Ross notified Goldsmiths Hall of a change of address to 39 Princes Street in 1837.

The Will of Thomas Ross, Silversmith of No 19 Green Street Leicester Square , Middlesex was proved at PCC on 17 February 1826 TNA/ PROB 11/1709/152.
Leicester Square (ex Fields) was in St Martins in Fields parish, and we now know his actual street number !

Thomas Duncan Charles, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Duncan Ross, was christened at St James, Clerkenwell in 1805. He applied for freedom by patrimony in the Goldsmiths Company in 1846, the document showing his father was made free in 1802 thus linking him with the Thomas Ross referred to above. There is no trace on websites of a marriage between Thomas Ross and Elizabeth Duncan. This may however cast doubt that the marriage to Elizabeth Webster in 1812 is relevant here.
It may also explain the change of address notified in 1837.
My thanks to Pat (Silverly) for the discovery of the earlier christening.
Mike
