Re: 19th Century Hampshire Silversmiths
Hello Trev,
Abraham
The available Census records show that the Abrahams were at 147, High Street Southampton from at least 1838 -1901 variously as watchmakers, jewellers or indeed money changers (as in the advertisement “Exchange for Foreign Coin”).
Abraham Abraham was born in Hampshire in 1801 to father Moses and disappears from the Census after 1841.
His son Henry traded at the address in 1851 aged just 26 years. Having married and produced at least 8 children he remained at the old address until around 1881. He died around this time, his wife being recorded as a widow in the 1891 Census but not being found in the earlier one.
At that point his son George born in 1859 may have taken over the business. He is at the address as a jeweller on the 1881 Census. He remained living with his mother and sister and traded at the old address until after the 1901 Census.
None of the Abrahams seems to have registered a mark at an Assay Office.
Regards,
Mike

Re: 19th Century Hampshire Silversmiths
Hi Mike,
Many thanks for adding this information.
It would appear that Abraham Abraham was an important member of the Southampton community. I came across this description of him: "The outstanding Jew in Southampton - successively bailiff returning officer and sheriff - was Abraham Abraham, a jeweller and silversmith."
Apparently, when Abraham Abraham was elected to the office of Sheriff, Southampton became the first provincial corporation to elect a Hebrew to municipal office.
His death must have occurred after 1846, as he was buried in a Hebrew Plot at Southampton that was not established until that year.
Regards Trev.

Re: 19th Century Hampshire Silversmiths
Hello Trev,
Yon
John Yon was born in Normandy France in about 1811. He married in Southampton in 1841 to Heloise Drieu. She was also born in Normandy in about 1825. They had at least 5 children.
The family was still at 8, High Street in 1861 where he said he was a jeweller, she mentioning no employment which is a little surprising in view of the advertisement and the subsequent statement in the 1871 Census.
By 1871 they were at 42, Bedford Place Southampton where he said he was a watchmaker & jeweller. She said she was a milliner & dressmaker.
John died in Southampton in 1877. No record has been found for him registering at an Assay Office
By 1881 Heloise was living in a lodging house at 32, Orchard Place Southampton with her son Oscar who was a clerk. She was unemployed.
She was living in Southampton with her daughter and son-in-law in 1891 and still unemployed.
Heloise died in Marlborough Wiltshire in 1893.
Regards
Mike
