Deny Larceny Charge

Young Men Arrested Following Robbery in Boston Store Plead Not Guilty

Boston, June 6.—Charged with larceny of jewelry valued at $15,000 from A, Stowell & Co., two young men who have been in Charles St. jail in default of $15,000 bail, were arraigned last week in the Municipal Court. They pleaded not guilty and were held in $7,500, the bail being lowered at the request of counsel on the ground that neither young man had been arrested before.

Harris D. Ferrell, manager of the store, said that following the arrest of one of the men he positively identified him, but could not be sure of the other. Stanley R. Miller, an attorney who happened to be in the store at the time of the robbery said that he was sure of the identity of one of the men who had fled from the store following the snatching of the rings.

Judge Murray declined jurisdiction and held the men for the Grand Jury.

The quarters that are to be occupied by Maynard & Potter, in the new building at the corner of Boylston and Berkeley Sts. are approaching completion. Mr. Maynard was formerly of the firm of A. Stowell & Co. It is expected that the new concern will be established by the close of the Summer vacation period, and ready for business in the location named.

Maynard & Potter, Inc., have been incorporated in the State of Massachusetts to manufacture and deal in diamond and other precious stones, with a capital stock of $50,000. The officers are; President, A. T. Maynard, Brookline; treasurer, A. Potter, Newton.

The funeral of Michael J. Mahoney, formerly engraver for A. Stowell & Co., whose death occurred on the 17th inst., took place on Wednesday last from his residence at 21 Bailey St., Dorchester.

The remodeling work that is in progress at the store of A. Stowell & Co., 24 Winter St., is of an extensive character, and will completely transform the old facade into a very handsome exterior, in strong contrast with the rather unpretentious appearance which it has presented in the past. Large and handsome windows for display purposes will be a feature.

A. D. Cook, vice-president of A. Stowell & Co., has gone to California to join his family, who have been spending the Winter there. Mr. Cook plans to remain away about six weeks.

Mrs. J. H. Spragg, wife of J. M. Spragg, of A. Stowell & Co., died recently, and Mr. Spragg has the sympathy of his many friends in the trade. Before going to this firm, Mr. Spragg was for about two decades with J. C. Sawyer & Sons.
