Compass pendant date

Post by dsinden »

Hi all,

Wondered if somebody could help with a date of this compass pendant.
My partner found it buried in the garden when digging around 20+ years ago and has had it kept in a jewellery box ever since,
We were having a look at it and found the hallmarks on it.
We have googled it and come back with the birmingham - M - lion and unknown maker.
As you can see it looks a bit battered from been buried no doubt and the pattern around the edge has been fixed on obscuring parts of the hallmark.
Hopefully somebody can id the various hallmarks.
We have looked but cant find the exact match for a a date purpose, as another website said there is lots of variations.

Thanks in advance.

Now i took pictures with a macro app, hopefully you will be able to zoom in

Hi,#
Most likely 1911 but images are really too small.
I suppose 2011 is too late.Is there 925 in an oval ?
Try better close up.

Hello again,
Could be 1886 (or 1911). Cannot see the cartouche, but letter cursive ``m`` looks Gothic (Old English).
There are small items without Victoria sovereign head duty mark.

I suggest it's more likely to be "w" for 1896:

Unfortunately the maker's mark is too obscured for a definite identification.

Thanks for the replies, we thought the maker was possibly B & Co or something like that.
Its all confusing as we found the M but box its in didnt match the era.
Likewise looked at it being a W too. May invest in something to look closer at it to see if we can find anything more.

If anyone else has any history to share on these would be nice to hear as not much comes up on google especially with the double sided bit.
