I have a salt spoon and have been unable to ID the maker / importer.
There is a French weevil mark, French export mark, on the front of the handle.
I have searched, as I know I have seen this makers mark somewhere before, but cannot find it anywhere, I have forgotten where I have seen it before.
It was assayed at London, 1910
Thank you for any help
Maker / importer ID of salt spoon
Re: Maker / importer ID of salt spoon
Hi User,
See: http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... 947#p96947
It doesn't take us much further forward, but at least we know that the mark was in use at least from 1910 to 1929.

Thanks Trev, certainly something to think about and do some more research, time permitting.
Re: Maker / importer ID of salt spoon
I have a theory!
We have 'MA' and a tree device, the tree looks like a pine. I believe the French for 'Pine' is 'Pin'. 'MA PIN'.
Are we looking at the retailer mark of Mappin & Webb's Paris branch?
1910
1910
1915
1929

Interesting theory and you could be on to something. I have had one spoon with the MA and tree mark on before, I think I remember posting it on here back then, it was a few years ago.

Sorry, I didn't realise your post was on my original post, I should have scrolled up to see my original post :)
Re: Maker / importer ID of salt spoon
A friend contacted Mappin & Webb over the likelihood of this being their mark used at their Paris branch. They have replied, but could not offer a definitive answer. Whilst they could find nothing in their records regarding such marking, they felt rather positive towards the theory of it and considered it a distinct possibility.
The hunt for a 100% positive outcome to this question continues, but, to me, M & W are in pole position.

At least they didn't dismiss the possibility, that is encouraging. Maybe one day we will all get a definitive answer. Please tell you friend thank you from me for contacting them.
