What was it for?

Postby juantotree » Mon Feb 06, 2017 8:20 am

Hi,

Not strictly a mystery object, as this is plainly a travelling/campaign mug on stand, that would have been used with a spirit burner to heat up something.
However what do people think its specific use was, could it simply be for heating and consuming a hot drink, heating water for use as a shaving mug or something else?

Most likely for heating water for whatever was needed.

Hi,

The cup meaures approximately 7cms high with a diameter of 5cms and it holds 1/4 of a pint. The maker is Horton & Allday, Birmingham 1900.

Hi,
That would be about 100 ml, too little for any drink.
It was probably used for sterilizing surgical instruments, e.g. syringes, lancets etc. when they were not disposable.

It was patented by Horton & Allday on 6 April 1901 under the heading of shaving appliances.
