What years are these Gorham cutlery?

Post by niceguy1 »

HI ALL

I have a part set of Gorham cutlery in the Old Baronial pattern.

All are marked Pat. 1898 & the Gorham symbols. The date letters are D, H & most have V .One is also marked by the retailer Cady & Olmstead.

So what years do these date codes correspond to?

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Hi Niceguy,

These are not date letters. To my knowledge they are Gorham internal marks that used to thought of as weight indicators, eg: 'R' - Regular, 'T' - Trade, 'H' - Heavy, 'E' - Extra, 'M' - Massive, etc, but other letters are also found, they may perhaps relate to the size, eg: Youth, Lunch, Place, Dinner etc.. To my knowledge these code letters have yet to be cracked with any degree of certainty, but perhaps another member has more up-to-date information than I do.

Might add - it's extremely uncommon to find date codes on Gorham flatware...
