Well cake server or fish server either or...? Anyway, to my understanding your server is made by Julius Edvard August Lohfert (JAL) 1868-1881 in St Petersburg (later he moved to Tallinn Estonia 1872-1896). It is assayed by Pavel Mihailov (ПМ) 1866-69 in St P in 18?? I do not understand why the two last digits in the hallmark are destroyed?

Thank you very much for your opinion.

Surely you're right with the fish server, i was in thoughts by another piece. :)

Are there sources on the internet or in literature where I can find something about Julius August Edvard Lohfert or Pavel Mihailov or derive the information in your own research?

The absence of the last two digits is a is a riddle for me too.

Sorry for my rusty english.

Best regards

No problem, you are welcome.
I'm not aware of any internet sources but you can try to search. What could be, however, a minor problem is that you should do the search in the Russian language then you might have a hit otherwise hardly. Anyway, Pavel Mihailov is an official only and has nothing to do with making the object. He is only guaranteeing that it is made of minimum legal fineness that is 84 zolotniks i.e. 875/1000. His working period and location I already told you. The actual master/maker is J. A. Lohfert. The information told is found in a book written in Estonian by Alur Reinans, an Estonian researcher. The name is Hõbedamärgid Eestis (Estonian silvermarks)/Die Silbermarken Estlands. It has partly text in German. Unfortunately the book like all similar silver books is rather difficult to find on the market. It is printed in 2005. That's about all I know.
