Help with possible Bateman Mark on 1799 Cream Jug?

Post by CarolinaCollectors »

This 5 ½” tall Cream Jug has marks consistent with 1799 date, but I cannot identify the Maker’s Mark. The Mark was tough to photograph, but I’ve provided 2 photos in hope of showing it clearly by seeing both photos. It is clearly an “AB over WB”. Given the date, and the style of the letters in the Mark, I first think of Ann Bateman and William Bateman. I find a “PB over AB over WB” mark of the same style, but I can find no “AB over WB” mark in my sources.

Can anyone help with this Maker’s Mark?? Thank you for your interest.

Jim

You practically worked it out yourself: if you look above the AB you can just see another set of initials: PB
So the jug was made by Peter, Anne and William Bateman.

The date marks are also consistent with the timing of the mark for Peter, Ann and William Bateman, which according to Grimwade's was registered in January 1800 (which would be marked with the year 1799).

Miles and dmay,

WOW!! Are you folks great!! This is very prompt and very helpful. And, next time I will look a lot closer!! And you've pointed out a new source for confirmation of marks.

Thank you for your interest, time, and help. I will surely try to be as good a forum member. All the best.
