Sterling Silver Ring with Acanthus leaf motifs

Post by kgriffi74 »

I have a sterling silver ring that has been passed down through the family and I was wondering where it is from and how old it is?

Hi, welcome to the forum.

Perhaps not Acanthus leaf motifs but Palm leaf motifs. Are there any visible (hall) marks you could show us?
Without any marks it will not be easy to determine the rings origin, although I feel the ring could originate from the East (middle or far).

Best,

Oel.

Hi Oel,

The jeweller looked at it and said the mark is 925. It is a bit dirty and needs a clean.

Hi Kirsty,

925 indicate sterling although not a hallmark, in other words no guarantee but I have no reason to doubt it will be below sterling standard. I am afraid only 925, it does not give us more clues about the origin of the ring.

Here is the hallmark. The 9 is blurry not sure if it is a 9 or an S.

Hi Kirsty,

The 925 numeral is no hallmark only an indication put on by the manufacturer of the ring. No assay office has been involved to test the proclaimed silver standard. If the ring would have been officially assayed, the assay office should have marked the ring accordingly, see world hallmarks:
Hallmarking explained:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_hallmarks
http://www.925-1000.com/foreign_marks.html
In the US the ring would have been marked by the maker with his maker’s mark and 925 and/or the word sterling.
Without an assay office mark and maker’s mark we will not be able to tell much more about the ring.

Best,

Oel.
