BROUGHTON, Henry (Grimwade p.451)

Post by MCB »

He entered a mark in 1827 at Goldsmiths’ Hall in partnership with Thomas Nortzell (Grimwade p.609) as button makers from 21 Bouverie Street, Fleet Street. Nortzell was a freeman of the Goldsmiths Company and traded as a hardware man. Broughton is recorded in various christening records of his children as a baker until 1814 then a hardware man in 1816. Other christening records for Broughton’s children show him in the locality of Fleet Street only in 1822-5 as a button maker and hardware man at Kirby Street but never living in Bouverie Street. He was trading as a hardware man in Newington, Surrey by 1827.
The 1841 UK Census listed him as a merchant in Dulwich, then described as a village.
It is somewhat surprising therefore that the Will of Henry Broughton, hardware man, proved for probate on 28th September 1849 shows his address as late of Bouverie Street, London (National Archives reference PROB 11/2099/71).

The referenced will does begin with the declaration that Henry Broughton was late of Bouverie Street, but the "probate statement," states that he was formerly of Bouverie Street and late of Fenchurch Street.
