Need help identifying a pair of fighting roosters

Post by srh11293 »

Need help identifying a pair of fighting roosters. I was told that they are sterling silver and were purchased from a Swedish estate. There are some marks on them, but I do not recognize the marks. Help would be greatly appreciated.

One of the days I will figure out how to post pictures, meanwhile, the roosters are sterling, so my question has been answered.

Thank you

Sorry, but your roosters are hardly silver but silver plated.
Of pure curiosity I took the risk and open the links because i have similar objects. What I believe has happened is that an acid test has been made. It showed very high silver fineness. The reason is that an electronically plated object's silver surface is always 100% silver. The problem with this test on a silver plated object is that the needed scratch hasn't been deep enough and has therefore not reached the base metal. It is usually German silver, alpaca, brass... In addition such objects are seldom made of silver. The marks are fantasy marks.

These fighting roosters could be made out of solid silver. Agree pseudo marks. I advise a proper silver test. use of XRF Alloy tester

It does indeed look like a Hanau mark of J. Kurz & Co.

@Peter,

Yes, they could be solid silver, but they seldom are. I haven't seen such roosters in silver but many silver plated like mine. They are so called "discussion activators" and meant to be put on the dinner table in order to activate discussions during the dinner. They have the same functions as those often human shaped ceramic/porcelain figurines also a part of the table setting.

@Trev.

You are welcome. It was worth the risk. It activated this "debate" ;-)

You are wrong! These solid silver roosters or in Dutch called zilveren Kemphanen are very popular and often 835/000-925/000 and sometimes gilded (gold plated). Hanau pseudo marks are seen on solid silver not on silver plated items. Yes we also have silver plated roosters.
