Russian Cigerette Case initial "K W" Borzoi Dog As

Post by opulent »

Hi Could anyone help identify these marks. Looks like makers initials "K W". The other mark is enclosed by a casket shape. It looks like a profile of a Russian Borzoi dog head with collar facing to the right. The dog is facing toward an "A". There is some other initial before the dog head. These marks are on the inside lid and base of the case.
There is also an inscription inside the case dated 1910.
There is what I think is an "R" ? inscripted on the exterior of the case. There are no other marks that I can find.
thanks for your time!

Post by silverport »

Hello

Your Cigarette case is made between 1908 until 1922 in Vienna, Austria, by Kurzer & Wolf.

Left hand shown mark is the Austrian silver fineness mark for 800/1,000 fineness on little objects; numerical 3 is there fore the signification — not the cartouche itself, as usual by the bigger ones. Capital letter A stand there fore Vienna assay office. This mark was in use from 1872 until 1922.

For basic information look to: http://www.925-1000.com/Faustria_menu.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Right hand shown mark is maker’s mark of the Viennese manufactory for little gold and silver products: Kurzer & Wolf (1908 until 1922) [in Waltraud Neuwirth Register of Vienna, vol. II, p. 348: Nr. 1613]

Predecessor was founded 1893 by Jakob Hersch Kurzer; who has got work permission in 1894. His first workshop was 1896 until 1900 settled in the V. District of Vienna, Griesgasse 38; and from 1903 on registered in the VI. Viennese District, Mollardgasse 33.

His successor factory of Kurzer & Wolf remained 1908 until 1922 in the VI. District of Vienna, Mollardgasse 33. Owner of Kurzer & Wolf were Jakob Hersch Kurzer and Gustav Wolf (from 1908 until 1922). In 1908 they have had 45 employees — and in 1922 they have had 30 (reason: I. World War).

Their specialities in Gold and Silver were: Cigarette cases and Tobacco tins, Cassettes and Cigarette lighter.

1914 their export markets were: Italy, Romania, Serbia, Germany, Egypt, Bulgaria. 1922 Balkan area, Hungary, Poland, Bohemia, Yugoslavia.
