MARRIOTT, Elizabeth (Grimwade p.592)

Post by buckler »

She was probably the widow of a silversmith but Grimwade was unable to suggest any possibilities for her husband .

However in 1738 a Edward Terrill see http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... 59&t=36901 was originally apprenticed to Brian(or Bryan, Byron) Marriott, and turned over to Robert Elliott, a silver bucklemaker.
Brian Marriott was of the Goldsmiths' and a jeweller and toyman by trade. He had no marks in the marks registers.
The turning over of Edward to Elliott could indicate that Brian Marriot (unrecorded), had died in 1738 and that Elizabeth, mark registered in 1739, was his widow.

It could also have been a "flag of convenience " to ensure Terrill obtained the freedom of the Goldsmiths, rather than of Elliott's company, the Leathersellers. Such behaviour was not unknown among the silver bucklemakers !

Elizabeth Marriott may be the lady who married William Judd at St Leonard, Shoreditch in 1741. Judd was another bucklemaker and an apprentice of Maurice Boheme , yet another !
