ALDOUS, J & J (Grimwade p.420)

Post by silverly »

6 September 1831 Henry son of James Aldous of Berwick Street Soho silversmith apprenticed to James Russell haberdasher of London.

My guess is that the father on this contract is one of the J's in this Grimwade listing and the other is a John Aldous whose signature is on Jame's wedding record. John may be a brother.

17 July 1768 John and William Cordy of Saint James Westminster Pawnbrokers paid apprentice duty for James Aldous.

25 February 1781 James Aldous Batchelor of Saint James Westminster married Elizabeth Ann Basey Spinster of the Parish of Saint Sepulchre Holborn City of London. One of the witnesses was William Cordy.

1843 James Aldous & son listed as Silversmiths & Pawnbrokers in the London Post Office Directory.

1851 UK Census James Aldous aged 67 years Retired Pawnbroker listed at 22 Soho Square.

These records indicate that there was a James Aldous born in about 1768 and one born in about 1784 who were both pawnbrokers. Sketchy as the records may be, they do make a better fit for this Grimwade entry than the James and John mentioned earlier.
