HICCOX, John (Grimwade p.545)

Post by MCB »

He may have been the John Hiccox, son of John Hiccox deceased malster of Birmingham, who was granted freedom by redemption in the Glovers Company in 1729 and listed in the 1750 London Poll Book in that Company as a watch maker from Hatton Wall.
Land Tax assessments from 1729-34 on property in Bartlett’s Buildings, Holborn were made on a person of this name.
As a freeman in the Glovers Company he took on apprentices Edward Jenkinson in 1733 and Charles W Wagner in 1741.
William the son of John and Mary Hiccox of Hatton Garden was christened at St Andrew, Holborn in 1738. Their address was Great Kirby Street when their son Thomas christened at St Andrew’s in 1750.
The burial of John Hiccox, late of St Andrew’s, Holborn, was registered on 19th January 1752 at St James, Paddington.
The Will of John Hiccox, watch maker late of St Andrew, Holborn, was proved for probate on 9th March 1752 (National Archives reference PROB 11/793/190).

Will of John Hiccox, Watch Maker of Saint Andrew Holborn , Middlesex was proved for probate on 9th March 1752 (TNA/ PROB 11/793/190)
It gives his address as, Little Kirby Street, Hatton Garden, in the Parish of St Andrew, Holbourn in the County of Middlesex .
T he names and addresses tally well with MCB's data so we seem to have the correct will , although it appears his main occupation was watch maker . Family members named are
Sons Thomas and Edward , Daughter Frances Hiccox, and brother Edward (who was one of the executors.)

There are bequests of a large number of properties , in both London (mainly Westminster ) and Stratford upon Avon , indicating he was a wealthy man . "Buy to let " was a fairly common practice in the Eighteenth Century when safe reliable investment possibilities were few ! Times do not change
The Hiccox family appear to have been from Warwickshire .
I could find no further useful data, except that one of his tenants was a Mr Pierce, Silver Smith in Hodge Lane , in the Parish of St Ann, Westminster
Naturally I cannot trace Hodge (or Lodge ) Lane, nor tie down a specific Mr Pierce !
