LASSELLS, Gervas (Grimwade p.296, 336)

Post by MCB »

The 1861 UK Census record shows he was born in Holborn, London around 1778.
No record of christening, apprenticeship or freedom has been found for him.
He entered a mark in 1799 at Goldsmiths’ Hall as a watch case maker from Great Sutton Street, Clerkenwell.
He married Charlotte Russell at St Bride’s, Fleet Street in 1801; they were both from that parish.
Grimwade listed George Lassells having entered a mark at Goldsmiths’ Hall in 1820 as a case maker from 16 Bateman’s Buildings, Soho. This appears to be an error as Gervas Lassells was listed as a watch case maker from that address in the 1820 London Poll Book and no record of a George Lassells has been found.
Marriages of his children Louisa in 1837, Henry and John both in 1837 and Gervas in 1843 record their father as a watch case maker or jeweller but no christening records have been found for them. Gervas signed as witness to Louisa’s marriage.
No record has been found for him in the UK Census for 1841 or 1851.
In 1861 he was listed as a watch maker aged 83 years living alone in the Watch and Clock Makers Alms Houses in East Barnet.
He does not appear to be listed in the England and Wales Death Registers 1837-1916. This and the other missing records for him which are mentioned above may have been caused by website transcription errors which, despite best efforts, have not been resolved.
