HODSOLL, William (Grimwade p.327, 352)

Post by MCB »

He entered two marks in 1799 at Goldsmiths’ Hall as a case maker from 31 Primrose Street, Bishopsgate and was assessed to Land Tax there from 1801-8. His predecessor at the property was Robert Hodsoll.
He is listed on page 155 of Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World as active in London until 1808.
He may have been the William Hodsoll who, as a widower, married Elizabeth Tottell at St Matthew, Bethnal Green in 1817.
Their daughter Frances was christened at St Leonard, Shoreditch in 1819. Her father was a watch maker but the address was omitted from the register. Three more christenings of their children at St Leonard’s on the same day in 1822 show their address as Phip Street and their father continuing to make watches.
No further information has been found for him.
