CANNING, John (Grimwade p.301)

Post by MCB »

The 1861 UK Census indicates he was born in Birmingham around 1780.
The christening record at St George, Bloomsbury in 1821 for Emma, a daughter of John and Mary Canning, shows her father as a coach founder at Hart Street.
He entered a mark at Goldsmiths’ Hall in 1836 as a small worker at 50 Long Acre and he was also listed there in trade directories in 1839 and 1845 and the 1841 UK Census in coach making, the 1836 mark presumably relating to silver fittings on or in coaches.
His wife Mary aged 64 years had died at Long Acre in 1844; her burial was registered at St Martin in the Fields.
His entry in the 1851 UK Census has not been found.
In 1861 he was aged 81 years, had retired from business and was living with his daughter Emma in Kentish Town.
He died in 1866.
