BOWTELL, Samuel (Grimwade p.289)

Post by MCB »

Samuel the son of Samuel and Mary Bowtell was christened at St Botolph, Bishopsgate in 1685.
Samuel senior entered a mark as a “free Clockmaker” at Goldsmiths’ Hall in 1697 possibly as a case maker from Fetter Lane.
Samuel Bowtell was assessed to Land Tax on property in Nevill’s Alley, Fetter Lane until 1719.
Page 36 of Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World lists Samuel Bowtell as apprenticed in the Clockmakers Company in 1673 and free from 1681-1707. The Land Tax assessments on the property in Nevill’s Alley from 1708 may therefore have been made on his son.
