WREN, John II (Grimwade p.711)

Post by MCB »

He was christened at St Augustine, Watling Street in 1744, the son of William and Martha.
The Land Tax assessment for 1776 on property in Bishopsgate previously occupied by Philip Roker had his name crossed through and “Wren” substituted. This remained so until 1781 when Wren’s full name was inserted.
John Wren married Elizabeth Roker (Grimwade p.645), the widow of Philip Roker III (Grimwade p. 645, 765-6), at All Saints, Poplar on 13th February 1777. He was from Stratford Bow and she was from Bishopsgate.
Philip Roker’s Will was granted probate in October 1776. Following the death of her husband Elizabeth had entered a mark at Goldsmiths’ Hall in October 1776 as a plate worker from Bishopsgate,. Wren entered his mark as a spoon maker from 95 Bishopsgate Street on 27th February 1777.
He continued to be assessed to Land Tax on property in Bishopsgate until 1786. The property was empty in 1787.
His burial aged 41 years was registered at St Botolph, Aldersgate in 1786..
The Will of John Wren, late silversmith of St Botolph without Bishopsgate parish, was granted probate on 13th June 1786.
