NICHOL, Samuel (Grimwade p 607)

Post by buckler »

Heal records him as Samuel NICHOLL, Goldsmith.
What is almost certainly his will was proved at PCC on 24 November 1749 (TNA/ PROB 11/774/462)

Oxfordshire Family History Society - Transcribed Wills and Related Documents gives a transcript on http://wills.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/az/w ... s_007.html

A full transcription of the will is on the site , plus a neat summary which is further paraphrased below.
The summary gives the date as 24 Nov 1769 which is an error.

I Samuel Nicholl citizen and goldsmith of London ...

I give all my estate and effects to my loving wife Ann Nicholl and such children as survive at my death as follows:

One third part to my loving wife Ann Nicholl, to which she is entitled as I am a freeman of the City of London.

Another third part, which I have the liberty to dispose of, I also give to my wife Ann Nicholl.

The remaining third part I give equally to all my children who survive to the age of 21 as and when they reach that age .
If any of them die before age 21, their share(s) go equally to the survivor(s).
If ALL my children die before 21 I give their third part to my wife Ann Nicholl
I appoint my loving wife Ann Nicholl sole Executrix.

Witnesses Benj'n Robinson J Jackson .

Proved by Ann Nicholl widow the relict and sole Executrix.

Very interesting as it neatly states the restrictions placed on testators who were Citizens of the City of London.

My thanks to our contributor * mrsalip * for the lead and Alison Potterton for the transcription ! Anne Potterton indicates that she thinks Ann Nicholls was born Ann Jarvis and gives a strange date of 1771 associated with her.

Information from Mike ( MCB )
His 1714 indentures were signed Samuel Nicholl not Nichol as Grimwade suggests.
He was assessed to Land Tax on unidentified property in Aldgate from 1734-49. The widow Nicholl was assessed on the property in 1750.
The partnership of Nicholl and Abdy which Heal noted in 1753 therefore seems to relate to another of the same surname.
