He was christened the son of Francis and Sarah Turrill at St Martin in the Fields in 1801.
As a bachelor from St James, Westminster parish he married Isabella Hester Cohen at St Mary, Islington in 1832. From later Census records she was born in Islington around 1815.
He entered a mark in 1836 at Goldsmiths’ Hall as a small worker at 250 Regent Street and was listed there in the Electoral register of 1839.
The 1841 UK Census recorded a John and Isabella Turrill living in Stoke Poges with daughters Frances aged 5 years, Isabella aged 3 years and son John aged 2 years. John Turrill senior was recorded of independent means. The entry appears relevant in view of the detail recorded on the 1851 Census (see below).
The 1843 London Post Office Directory listed him as John Turrill & Co, writing and dress case manufacturer of 210 and 250 Regent Street.
The 1851 UK Census recorded Isabella Turrell living at 6 Newton Road, Paddington with daughters Frances aged 15, Isabella aged 13 and Annie aged 5 years. Isabella, the mother, was listed as the wife of a dressing case manufacturer employing 8 men. A John Turrill was not listed as living at the property. Their son John appears to have been at boarding school in Ramsgate.
The 1856 London Post Office Directory listed him in his own name as a writing case maker at 52 New Bond Street.
He was a lodger in Gravesend, Kent for the 1861 UK Census, his income coming as a freeholder.
The Principal Registry extract of probate of his Will shows he died in Gravesend in 1862, late of Cazenue Street, Rochester and formerly of 52 New Bond Street. His widow Isabella was named executrix. She lived in Belgium. The value of the estate was under £200.
