TURTON, William (Grimwade p.686-7)

Post by MCB »

He was christened in 1743 at St John Horsleydown, Bermondsey, the son of blacksmith Thomas Turton and his wife Sarah.
William Turton goldsmith married Elizabeth Trueblood Izzard at St John Horsleydown in 1764; they were both from that parish.
Two of their children were christened at St Sepulchre, Holborn in 1765 and 1769, another at St John Horsleydown in 1775, the record showing William as a goldsmith. Two more of their children were christened at St Botolph, Aldersgate in 1780 and 1785.
The burial of a William Turner registered in August 1798 at St Giles, Cripplegate is probably relevant.
The mark MT entered by Mehatabell Turton from Monkwell Street in October 1798, is suggested by Grimwade as possibly by William Turton’s widow. This now seems unlikely unless Elizabeth used such a name.

Silverly has discovered a second marriage of William Turton which indicates that Grimwade was actually correct in suggesting that the silversmith Mehetabell Turton was William’s widow.

9 August 1792
William Turton Widower married Mehetabell Okey widow at Saint Mary Islington.

6 September 1798
Will of William Turton, Silver Smith of Saint Luke, Old Street , Middlesex, proved at PCC (TNA/PROB 11/1313/12 )

The will names Mehetabell as his wife (widow) , and his sons , William (eldest) , Thomas and James (a minor at date of will)
Also his daughters, Sarah (a spinster ) ,Ann Casson (?) and Charlotte Turton
The Executors named were Samuel Glover (?) - perhaps the father of Thomas Glover (Grimwade p.524) and William Izard - almost certainly a relation of Elizabeth Trueblood Izzard , who I think we can now say with some degree of certainly was William Turton's first wife

Mehetabell appears to be an oft married lady. A widow when she married William Turton, she subsequently married a John Colmer
