He was christened the son of Thomas and Mary Merry at St Gregory by St Paul in 1748.
Indentures were signed in 1763 by John, the son of Thomas Merry, to be the apprentices of William Kersill (Grimwade p.570) of the Turners Company.
He was free in 1770 and entered marks as a silversmith from 1782.
He was assessed to Land Tax on property in Moorfields from 1782 and in Fore Street from 1786-9.
John Bull, the son of Ralph Bull of Bethnal Green, signed indentures in 1783 to be the apprentice of John Merry of the Turners Company and was free in December 1790. A John Bull of Bethnal Green is noted by Grimwade on page 453 as entering a mark at Goldsmiths Hall as a silversmith from Bethnal Green also in December 1790.
He married Ann Kimpson at St Leonard, Shoreditch in 1784.
Two of their sons were christened at St Giles, Cripplegate in 1785 and 1787 each record showing their father as a silversmith.
He paid for trade directory entries in 1789 and 1790 as a silversmith and jeweller from Fore Street.
He was listed in the 1796 Electoral Register as a freeman of the Turners Company at Addle Street, Aldermanbury from where his last mark was entered at Goldsmiths' Hall in 1799.
He was assessed to Land Tax on property in Aldermanbury from 1790-1819. A new tenant was assessed on the property in 1820 indicating Merry had retired or died.
