LESTOURGEON, William (Grimwade p.581, 757)

Post by MCB »

His father was Aaron Lestourgeon of the Skinners Company made free by redemption in 1723 and listed in the 1750 London Poll Book at Lawrence Poultney Row.
Aaron (Grimwade p.581, 757), the son of William and Mary Lestourgeon of Salisbury Court, was christened in 1742 at St Bride’s, Fleet Street.
He paid Land Tax on property in St Martin le Grand parish from 1747- 60 and in Aldersgate Street until 1763.
He last paid Land Tax at Mouldmaker Row in 1771 and then presumably retired from business as the accounts of Parker & Wakelin show his son Aaron alone submitting invoices for payment from that year.

Poll of City & Liberty of Westminster taken at Covent Garden 22 November to 8 December 1749
gives a
William LE STURGEON [sic], Snuffbox Maker, St Martin Le Grand,

Whether this indicates he was active on his own before his partnership with Aaron Le Stourgeon in 1767, or this refers to a relative is at present unknown

A William Lesturgeon of St James Parish Westminster jeweller was bound (for the purpose of marriage) to Sarah Turner on 29 November 1775. William was a bachelor and Sarah a spinster.
The date seems a little late to refer to the the original Lestourgeon.

William and son London goldsmiths are recorded as paying for the indenture of Robert Nichol in 1768 which may already recorded elsewhere.

It's an unusual name so it would not be surprising if Isaac Lesturgeon, Silver Turner of Saint Giles in the Fields , Middlesex, whose will was proved at PCC on 15 December 1758 ( NRA/ PROB 11/842/345) was not related

Along with Buckler's Isaac Lesturgeon, Heal records a David LETURGEON, who was also described as a Silver Turner, next door to King Charles' Head, Church Lane (Strand), during the period 1702-1704.
