Grimwade questioned whether the indentures Robert Gaze signed in 1765 to be the apprentice of John Broughton related to the plateworker from Shoe Lane who entered a mark at Goldsmiths Hall as late as 1795. He suggested there might be two of the same name.
Robert Gaze became free in 1772-3.
He married Mary Ellis at St Botolph, Aldersgate in 1779 and they had moved into Shoe Lane by 1782. Their first child was christened at Dr William’s Library in 1780, the next at St Giles, Cripplegate in 1788 followed by three children christened at St Andrew, Holborn from 1791-1802. None was named Robert.
In 1798 he took John Gale from Gloucester as an apprentice, in 1804 Joseph Harper from London and in 1808 Henry William Marshall also from London.
He continued to be assessed to Land Tax at Shoe Lane until 1818.
